Description

The AudioQuest NRG-Y2 power cable was created to optimize the power reaching the most sensitive electronics in hi-fi and home theater systems. It inherits the construction and noise-dissipating solutions of the NRG Storm series, bringing these design insights to a more accessible version, designed for devices with a C7 socket (the so-called "figure-eight" socket). It is therefore aimed at network streamers, Blu-ray players, compact DACs, satellite decoders and cable set-top boxes, where a clean power supply audibly impacts signal quality.

At the heart of the design are seven direction-controlled Long-Grain Copper ( LGC ) conductors , arranged in a semi-solid concentric geometry . In this configuration, the individual strands maintain a fixed position relative to each other throughout the cable: a choice that significantly reduces strand-interaction distortion, a phenomenon typical of conventional multi-strand cables. The more uniform crystalline structure of LGC copper further contributes to lowering background noise and preserving the dynamic coherence of the audio signal.

One of the most interesting technical features is the presence of silver-plated ground conductors , also with controlled direction. Although it is a two-pole cable (Schuko – C7), the third "ground" prong, seemingly unexpected, acts as an escape route for radio frequency interference, draining it to ground and preventing it from polluting the power supply of digital sources. The result is more dynamic output and a quieter soundstage, with a more defined and focused soundstage.

On the electrical level, AudioQuest applies the principle of zero characteristic impedance (50 Hz – 1 MHz) to the NRG-Y2 : unlike traditional cables which, despite having low DC resistance, tend to compress the current transients required by the electronics in musical peaks, here the combination of low DC resistance and zero characteristic impedance returns all the current required to the connected device without dynamic limitations. This detail is especially perceptible in the more complex passages, where correctly powered power amplifiers and converters express a more open macrodynamics and a more readable microdynamics.

Replacing the supplied cable with an NRG-Y2 is straightforward: just check that the device has a C7 input and choose the desired length from the drop-down menu. If the components allow it, the balanced XLR connection is preferable for long runs.
