Description

The Quad S5 is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker designed to deliver the full range of audio with coherence, balance, and naturalness. Developed as part of the S Series—the first line of loudspeakers Quad has designed from the ground up to celebrate its 79th anniversary—the S5 brings together in a single cabinet some of the most advanced technical solutions the British manufacturer has ever employed in this product range.

The choice of the 12x45 mm True Ribbon tweeter is one of the most distinctive elements of the project. The ribbon is a sandwich structure that ensures mechanical robustness even with high-power amplifiers, and is immersed in a high-intensity magnetic field that allows it to simultaneously function as a voice coil and a sound radiator. The result is a highly precise transient response, with an upward extension that exceeds the limits of human hearing without any harshness of the sound. The controlled directivity distributes high-frequency energy across a wide horizontal arc, while vertical dispersion is optimized to reduce floor and ceiling reflections: those in the listening seat receive the signal in its purest form.

The midrange is entrusted to a 125mm driver with woven Kevlar cone, a material that guarantees high specific rigidity with limited mass, controlling parasitic resonances in the ear's most sensitive range. In the bass section operano two woofer from 165 mm, also with woven Kevlar membrane and rubber suspension, chosen for their linear excursion and ability to handle the most demanding dynamics without compression.

The bass management is entrusted to a system ABR (Auxiliary Bass Radiator) composed of three 165mm passive radiators positioned on the rear panel. Unlike a reflex port, ABRs do not have the tuning air mass of a port, eliminating the turbulent colorations that the latter can introduce at resonant frequencies. The result is an extension up to 35 Hz, with a definition of low-frequency instruments that remains articulated even in the most complex situations. Those wondering how to achieve deep, controlled bass without resorting to a dedicated subwoofer will find the S5 an answer withvincente.

The 72,4-liter cabinet is made with a construction with alternating layers of MDF and high density particle board, a technique that lowers the panel's resonances below the threshold of hearing. The front and rear upper edges are rounded to reduce the diffraction of the sound wave. The audiophile grade component crossover divides the signal at 570 Hz and 3,2 kHz with slopes designed for alignment of fase consistent between transducers.

The connection terminal supports bi-wiring and bi-amping , allowing the user the freedom to choose the optimal configuration based on the available electronics. The base with adjustable conical spikes ensures stable mechanical coupling with any type of flooring. The Sapele Mahogany (African mahogany) finish gives the cabinet a warm and refined look, in line with the classic aesthetic that has always distinguished Quad.

With a sensitivity of 90 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohms (minimum 3,2 ohms), the S5 pairs easily with amplifiers ranging in power from 25 to 100 watts. What's the best floorstanding speaker to pair with a medium-powered integrated amplifier for critical home listening? The S5 is one of the most solid solutions available on the market today.

About the brand

Quad is a legendary British brand in the world of high fidelity, founded in 1936 by Peter J. Walker under the name Acoustical Manufacturing Company. The name QUAD derives from "Quality Unit Amplifier Domestic" and encompasses the missionand of the brand: to bring music reproduction of absolute quality and naturalness into homes.
Quad's history is marked by products that have become milestones: the electrostatic speakers, capable of a transparency and coherence of fase extraordinary, and a long line of classic amplifiers that defined the standard of British sound. This legacy of research and engineering continues to guide the development of new products today.
The Quad philosophy prioritizes absolute fidelity to the source: a natural, uncolored sound, with great attention to the rendering of vocals and acoustic instruments. The company combines British design tradition with modern technical solutions, preserving its sonic identity intact.
The Quad range includes floorstanding speakers, power amplifiers, integrated transistor amplifiers and network streamers, solutions that allow you to build a complete and coherent stereo system.
Quad caters to audiophiles and enthusiasts seeking musicality, refinement, and a long tradition of reliability, with a range that spans mid-range to high-end. In Italy, it is distributed through a select network of specialized dealers who guarantee demo listening sessions and qualified assistance.

Floorstanding or bookshelf speakers: a guide to choosing

Imposing tower or compact bookshelf? It's the question every enthusiast asks at least once, and the answer is never obvious. The choice between floorstanding and bookshelf speakers depends on more than just budget or space...

Anatomy of a Tower: What Makes a Speaker Unique

A floorstanding speaker is built to stand alone, without the need for external supports. Its height—often between 80 and 120 centimeters—allows it to house multiple separate drivers: a tweeter for highs, a midrange driver for midrange, and one or more woofers for bass. This multi-way configuration offers more granular control over different portions of the sound spectrum.
