Mechanics: the starting point
The mechanics are the part that spins the disc and reads it with a laser. A well-built mechanics reads data consistently, handles damaged or burned discs better, is quiet, and lasts a long time. Higher-end players often feature dedicated mechanics, rigid frames, and sturdy drawers; entry-level models offer simpler but more reliable solutions. Ergonomics are also worth considering: a clear display, remote control, and, if needed, a USB port for playing files from a flash drive.
Internal DAC and digital outputs
After reading, the digital signal passes to the DAC, the converter that transforms it into an analog signal for the amplifier. The quality of the DAC and the analog output stage significantly affects the player's sound. Many CD players also offer digital outputs (coaxial and/or optical), and some have digital inputs, so you can use their DAC with other sources like TVs or streamers. Check the connections before choosing, especially if you already have other digital devices in your system.
CD, SACD and DVD
Audio CD is the most common format and can be played by any player. SACD (Super Audio CD) is a high-resolution format: many SACD discs are hybrid and also contain a CD layer, playable by any player, while the high-resolution layer requires an SACD-compatible player. CD/DVD players, on the other hand, are designed for those who want a single device for music and video, connected to both a stereo and a TV.
The reader as transport
If you already have a good external DAC , you can use the player solely to read the disc and send the signal via the digital output. In this case, the transport and the quality of the digital output are what matter most. There are also dedicated transports, without internal conversion, designed specifically for systems with a separate DAC: an interesting solution if you plan to upgrade the DAC over time.
