About the brand

Teac, seventy years of recording and playback

Teac was founded in Japan in 1953, when brothers Katsuma and Tomoma Tani founded the Tokyo Television Acoustic Company in Tokyo. Its current name derives from the initials of the Tokyo Electro-Acoustic Company, the company with which it later merged. The first commercial product, the TD-102 reel-to-reel tape recorder, dates back to 1957, and for decades the brand was synonymous with tape recording: from the four-track reel-to-reel decks of the 1960s and 1970s, which brought multitrack to home studios, to the A-20 of 1968, which Teac itself claims was the first hi-fi-quality stereo cassette deck produced in Japan.

From this same experience, Tascam, the division dedicated to the professional world, was born, and in 1987, Esoteric, the group's high-end brand. It was in this context that Teac developed the VRDS (Vibration-free Rigid Disc-clamping System) mechanism, in which the CD is clamped onto a rigid platter of the same diameter as the disc: the disc remains flat and vibrations during rotation are reduced, resulting in more stable playback.

Technologies and reference series

Today, the Teac catalog encompasses two distinct segments. On one side, there's the audiophile line, which includes the VRDS-701 CD player, created to celebrate the company's seventieth anniversary with a newly designed VRDS transport. On the other, there are devices designed for those who want to continue using physical media in a practical way: turntables with built-in phono preamplifiers, cassette decks with digital outputs, and multifunctional players that combine CDs, radio, and USB sticks.

The Teacs available from us

Among the CD players you will find the new Teac VRDS-701, the proposal for those who give the silver disc the role of the main source, and the Teac CD-P750DAB, which combines a CD player, DAB+ and FM tuner, Bluetooth and reading from USB and SD card, with the possibility of recording from CD or radio to memory without going through the computer.

For cassettes, there are two new devices. The Teac W-1200 is a dual deck with two independent transports, pitch control, and a USB output for transferring tapes to a computer; the Teac AD-850-SE combines a cassette deck, CD player, and USB stick recording, with a microphone input.

For vinyl, the new Teac TN-180BT is available, a three-speed belt-drive turntable with built-in phono preamplifier, Bluetooth transmitter and pre-installed Audio-Technica cartridge.

How to choose

The first question concerns the source you'll use most. If you have a large CD collection and a system capable of showcasing it, the VRDS-701 is the obvious choice; if, on the other hand, the player also needs to function as a radio and a listening point for files and your smartphone, the CD-P750DAB covers all of these in a single device.

For cassettes, usage matters: those who need to duplicate or digitize a tape collection will appreciate the W-1200's dual transports, while those who want both CDs and cassettes in the same space will find the AD-850-SE the most compact solution. The TN-180BT is a good starting point for vinyl: thanks to its built-in phono preamp, it connects to any amplifier even without a dedicated input, and with Bluetooth, it can play on wireless speakers.

Vinyl, Streaming, or CD: Which Source to Choose to Get Started

Choosing the source is the first real choice when building a Hi-Fi system. Vinyl, digital streaming, or CD? Each has its own unique characteristics, different costs, and a specific learning curve. There's no universal answer: it depends on how you listen,…

Vinyl: Ritual, warmth, and physical involvement

Vinyl is the quintessential analog source. It requires a turntable, a cartridge, a preamp (often integrated into the amplifier), and a minimum amount of care in setup. The sound has a recognizable signature: smooth, full-bodied, with a natural spatiality that many describe as "warm." It's not technically perfect—there's background noise, serious wear, and a lack of clarity.dualand — but it's involvement.

Impeccable construction, solidity, and finishing touches that only the Japanese can produce. The sound is rich and full-bodied with powerful bass. I think the quality of this player is a mix of quality transport and a new-generation DAC, combined with a superb power supply with three Toro transformers.dali.
