Signal cables, or interconnects, connect low-level components: turntables, CD players, DACs, or streamers on one side, and preamplifiers or amplifiers on the other. Precisely because the signal is weak, a well-made cable helps keep out hum and noise. That said, a signal cable doesn't change the character of a system: the differences between well-built interconnects are generally subtle, and what matters most are the right type of connection, good shielding, connectors that make firm contact, and a reasonable length. RCA or balanced XLR

The RCA audio cable is the most common connection in home hi-fi and is perfect for short distances between components on the same cabinet. The balanced XLR connection carries the signal over two conductors plus ground and is more resistant to noise picked up along the way, making it useful for long runs, such as between a preamplifier and distant power amplifiers. Be careful, though: the advantages of the balanced connection are only available if both devices have a truly balanced circuit; the presence of the XLR socket alone is not enough, so check the manuals.

Shielding, length and installation

• Choose the length you need without overdoing it: a shorter cable is also less exposed to interference.
• Keep signal cables separate from power cables, and if they must cross, cross them at right angles.
• Check that the RCA connectors fit tightly onto the sockets: loose contact is a common cause of hissing and static.

Phono cables for turntables

A turntable produces an even weaker signal than a CD player, especially with moving coil cartridges. This is why there are dedicated phono cables, often with a separate ground wire to connect to the phono stage or amplifier terminal. If your turntable is humming, this is the first thing to check.
