Hi-fi headphones allow you to listen to music with a level of detail difficult to achieve with speakers, without being dependent on the room's acoustics or disturbing those around you. They're the ideal choice for late-night listening, for those living in small spaces, or for those who want to complement their stereo with a second, more intimate listening system. In this category, you'll find hi-fi headphones for home listening and models designed for mobile use, from beginner headphones to high-end references.
Open or closed headphones
Open-back headphones have air-permeable earcups: the sound is more airy and has a wider soundstage, but it can also be heard outside and doesn't isolate you from noise. They're perfect for quiet listening at home. Closed-back headphones isolate better in both directions: they're better suited for listening in crowds, while traveling, or in the office. Comfort also matters: weight, pressure on the head, and earcup material make a difference during long listening sessions.
Impedance, sensitivity and amplification
Impedance and sensitivity indicate how easy a headphone is to drive. Low-impedance, high-sensitivity models sound good even when connected to a smartphone, computer, or the headphone output of an amplifier. High-impedance headphones, or those with low sensitivity like many planar headphones, require more voltage or current: with a low-power source, they can sound dull and lack dynamics. In these cases, a dedicated headphone amplifier is the right choice. Before choosing, always check the specifications on the product sheet and consider what you will be using as the source.
Dynamic, planar and wireless
Most headphones use dynamic transducers, while planar models use a thin diaphragm driven by magnets across their entire surface. There are also quality wireless headphones and earbuds that are convenient for on-the-go: in these cases, the supported Bluetooth codecs and any noise cancellation are also important.
