A record cleaner, or vinyl record cleaner, removes dust, grease, and dirt from the grooves that a dry brush can't. The results are noticeable: less hiss and clicking, a quieter bottom, and a less dirty stylus. It's the most useful accessory for those who buy used records or want to preserve their collection for the long term.
How a record cleaner works
In vacuum machines, the record spins on the platter, cleaning fluid is applied with a brush, and a vacuum arm collects the dirty liquid along with the residue, leaving the record dry in one or two rotations. The simplest systems are tray-based and are operated manually, without a motor. Some machines rotate the platter in both directions to better clean the grooves; other high-end machines wash and dry both sides of the record at the same time. Before choosing, it's also worth considering compatibility with 45 rpm records and 7- and 10-inch records, the noise level, and the ease with which the tank is emptied.
