Speaker stands are supports, or pedestals, on which bookshelf speakers are placed to raise them to the right height and detach them from furniture and walls. They may seem like a secondary accessory, but for a compact speaker they often make more of a difference than many electronic upgrades: a bookshelf placed on a bookcase or low cabinet causes the shelf to vibrate, sounds lower than your ears, and loses precision. Raised on a rigid stand, the same speaker usually delivers a more focused stereo image and cleaner bass. For heights, distances, and angles, you can find everything in the speaker positioning guide.

The right height: the tweeter to the ear

The simplest guideline is this: sitting at your listening position, the tweeter should be roughly at ear height. The stand height should then be chosen by adding the height of the stand to the tweeter's position on the speaker, and taking into account the low height of your sofa or armchair. A few centimeters more or less isn't a problem, and if the speaker is a bit low, you can tilt it slightly upward.

Stiffness, mass and dimensions of the plane

• Rigidity: A stand that wobbles or resonates colors the sound; sturdy columns and wide bases stay put even if you bump them.
• Mass: Some supports have hollow columns that can be reempire with sand or granules to dampen resonances and make them more stable.
• Support surface: it must be suitable for the base of the speaker, without the speaker protruding betweenoppo; also check the maximum weight indicated by the manufacturer.

Some manufacturers create stands dedicated to a specific series of speakers, designed for height, aesthetics and mounting: if they exist for your speakers, they are the simplest choice.

Decoupling: tips or rubbers

Spikes or feet are used between the stand and the floor, and between the stand and the speaker. The spikes pierce carpets and rest on the floor below, providing stability; on parquet and marble, always use spike pads to avoid damaging the surface. Between the floor and the speaker, small rubber pads or adhesive pads prevent slipping and scratches. Before changing the stand, check that it doesn't wobble and adjust the spikes until it's perfectly level.
