Description

The Quad 3 is a compact stereo integrated amplifier that echoes the aesthetics of the Quad 22 preamplifier and the new 33/303 pair: a front panel with an orange LCD strip and a row of knobs for volume, source, bass, tilt, and balance. Inside is a complete system: a Class AB power amplifier with 65 W per channel into 8 ohms (100 W into 4 ohms), DAC, phono input, Bluetooth, and a headphone output.

The power supply uses a 235 VA toroidal transformer with 30.000 µF filter capacitors and delivers up to 10 A of current, enough to drive even demanding speakers with control. The Tilt control , designed by Peter Walker, tilts the response around 700 Hz in 1 dB steps to make the sound warmer or clearer; the bass adjustment has a ±3 dB range.

How do you connect your TV to a hi-fi amplifier? With the Quad 3, the HDMI ARC input is all you need : the TV's audio goes to the amplifier, and the volume can be adjusted with the TV remote control. The digital section is based on the ESS ES9038Q2M DAC followed by a Class A filter: from USB it accepts PCM up to 768 kHz and DSD512, from coaxial and optical up to 192 kHz, with selectable upsampling to 352,8 or 384 kHz.

For vinyl records, there's a low-noise MM phono stage , while Bluetooth 5.1 aptX HD receives high-resolution music from smartphones and tablets. The equipment also includes two RCA line inputs, a pre-out for a power amplifier or subwoofer, a current-feedback headphone amplifier (20 to 600 ohms), a 12V trigger, and a full-featured remote control.

Truly amazing!!! The sound is essentially neutral, but I was amazed by its precision. It's small, but it's more than enough with both the L52s and the SF Concertinos (this pairing, in particular, is very satisfying). It was supposed to be a backup system for the office, but for three weeks now, it's been sounding like a serious system in the living room. Exceptional quality/price ratio.
