About the brand
Sony was founded in Tokyo on May 7, 1946, under the name of Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo, on the initiative of Masaru Ibuka e Akio MoritaAmong the first products was the Type-G, the first tape recorder built in Japan; the Sony brand appeared in 1955 on the transistor radio TR-55 and in 1958 it also became the name of the company.
Sony has played a leading role in the history of music reproduction. In 1979 it launched the Walkman, the portable cassette player for listening with headphones. Together with Philips he developed the Compact Disc, and the CDP-101, released in Japan on October 1, 1982, is considered the first CD player to hit the market. He also developed the Super Audio CD with Philips: in 1999 the first flagship player for this format was the SCD-1, flanked by its twin SCD-777ES with only unbalanced outputs.
For home hi-fi the reference line is the series ES, which includes integrated amplifiers from the TA-F family, preamplifiers such as the TA-E77ESD and CD players: among these the CDP-X77ES and the CDP-X55ES from the late 1980s, built in Japan. Alongside the ES models, Sony also produced cheaper components, speakers, and turntables, so you can find a bit of everything in used dealerships.
In vintage CD players, one aspect to consider is the optical assembly. For many Sony models, the KSS series laser mechanisms, such as the KSS-210A and KSS-240A, are still available as compatible spare parts, while for some older ones, such as the KSS-280A and KSS-273B, they are now very rare: it is therefore worth checking that the device reads discs correctly.
