Description

The Rega Apollo CD is the entry-level CD player produced by the historic English company Rega Research since 2007, conceived as the natural heir to the pioneering Planet player of the 1990s. Despite its accessible price range, this vintage hi-fi CD player adopts technical solutions that at the time were only found on much more expensive devices: a Wolfson WM8740 DAC and a Sanyo transport without a magnetic stop, replaced by an innovative three-ball spindle that holds the disc without tightening it.

Loading is done from the top, by lifting the distinctive damped strut cover that protects the disc tray: an aesthetic detail that has become a hallmark of the entire Rega range over the years. The gloss black front panel is limited to the essentials—display, power button, and four transport controls—consistent with the brand's minimalist philosophy.

At the rear, the Apollo offers outputs RCA analog and two digital outputs (coaxial S/PDIF and optical Toslink), which make it usable not only as a complete CD source but also as a pure digital transport combined with a superior quality external DAC: an interesting solution for those who are wondering How to connect a high-quality CD player to an external DAC to update gradualIt allows you to fully refine your system without replacing the entire source. The sound is typical of the English brand: natural timbre, full-bodied and well-controlled bass, and a more analog than digital feel, appreciated at the time by the specialist press as one of the references in its price range.

Choosing the source is the first real choice when building a Hi-Fi system. Vinyl, digital streaming, or CD? Each has its own unique characteristics, different costs, and a specific learning curve. There's no universal answer: it depends on how you listen,…

Vinyl: Ritual, warmth, and physical involvement

Vinyl is the quintessential analog source. It requires a turntable, a cartridge, a preamp (often integrated into the amplifier), and a minimum amount of care in setup. The sound has a recognizable signature: smooth, full-bodied, with a natural spatiality that many describe as "warm." It's not technically perfect—there's background noise, serious wear, and a lack of clarity.dualand — but it's involvement.
