Description

The JBL Radiance 99VX is the top model of the Radiance series, the line with which JBL brought its experience as a studio monitor manufacturer to a more accessible price range. These are generously sized , 3-way bass-reflex speakers , designed for those looking for classic JBL sonic character without having to step up to the L Series.

The speaker section consists of a 30cm woofer with sheet metal basket, a 13cm cone midrange enclosed in its own container separate from the rest of the internal volume, and a 7,5cm cone tweeter. The cutoff frequencies are set at 600 Hz and 3000 Hz, with a Crossovers at 12 dB/octave and inductors wound on ferrite cores. On the rear panel there is a three-position diverter (decrease, normal, increase) which regulates the level of emissionand the tweeter, useful for adapting the high-frequency output to the listening environment.

How do the JBL Radiance 99VX speakers sound? Their ideal terrain is modern music: in pop, in rock and in disco music the 99VX express good dynamics, powerful bass has always been power maintained with vincentand, supported by aefficiency of note. Also in the jazz They deliver a broad soundstage and clear tonal contours on soloists. The midrange is slightly prominent, while the very highs are more discreet: a direct sonic signature that favors energy and rhythm over symphonic refinement.

From a construction point of view, the piece of furniture is a parallelepiped made of good quality chipboard, covered in wood-colored vinyl on all four sides, with the front panel in black. Connections are made via convenient clamping clamps. As this is a speaker from the 1980s, its value for the collector is linked to the professional heritage of the brand; in fase of purchase is opportuno check the condition of the cones, suspensions and crossover capacitors, components that on a vintage example may require maintenance.

For pairing, the 99VXs require an amplifier with power ranging from 10 to 200 watts; given their generous size and low-frequency response, they perform best raised off the floor on sturdy stands and spaced about twenty centimeters from the back wall. An amplifier with tone controls helps calibrate the high range to your tastes.

About the brand

JBL is one of the most iconic brands in global audio, founded in 1946 in Los Angeles by James Bullough Lansing. The American company is a global leader in the design and manufacture of professional and consumer audio systems, with a dominant presence in the high-fidelity and home entertainment sectors. For over seventy years, JBL has represented excellence in acoustic engineering, combining technological innovation and sound quality for discerning audiophiles and music enthusiasts.
JBL's corporate philosophy is based on a fundamental principle: "The Truth. Nothing More. Nothing Less." This vision reflects an unwavering commitment to reproducing sound in its purest and most authentic form, without coloration or distortion. James Bullough Lansing, a visionary engineer with a background at Altec Lansing, founded the company with the goal of pushing the technological boundaries of the time by developing revolutionary transducers for the film and music industries. JBL's history is filled with technological breakthroughs that have redefined the audio industry. In the 50s, the company introduced the first cinema speaker system with extended frequency response, quickly becoming the gold standard for Hollywood. The transition to the consumer market occurred in the 60s, when JBL began developing home hi-fi speakers that brought the same precision and power as professional systems into audiophile homes. The acquisition by Harman International in the 80s allowed JBL to further expand its global presence while maintaining the quality and innovation that characterize the brand.
JBL's signature technologies are at the heart of modern acoustic innovation. Compression transducer technology with waveguides is one of the most significant innovations, enabling uniform dispersion of sound energy and exceptional dynamics. Titanium and beryllium dome tweeters ensure crystal-clear, distortion-free high-frequency reproduction, while woofers with polypulp cones and composite diaphragms deliver deep, controlled bass. Waveguide technology, developed by JBL's research laboratories, optimizes acoustic directivity for any listening environment. Elastic suspension systems and anti-vibration structures minimize unwanted resonances, ensuring neutral and detailed musical reproduction. High-quality crossover networks, made with select components, ensure perfect integration between the different transducers.
JBL's high-fidelity product line includes floorstanding speakers, bookshelf speakers, active systems, and reference-level subwoofers. Studio Series floorstanding speakers include two-, three-, and four-way models designed for high-end stereo systems. These speakers feature large-diameter woofers for low-frequency reproduction and compression tweeters for high-frequency frequencies, ensuring a wide, immersive soundstage. Bookshelf speakers are the ideal solution for smaller rooms, maintaining the same technical features as compact floorstanding models.
The series Synthesis represents the pinnacle of JBL's audiophile production, with speakers that utilize technologies derived from professional cinema systems. The Project line combines tradition and innovation, offering speakers with a vintage design but with modern technologies. JBL active speakers integrate Class D digital amplifiers and DSP processors for automatic frequency response optimization. The LSR series is dedicated to professional monitoring and is also used in reference hi-fi systems.
JBL's awards are a testament to the brand's excellence in the audio industry. Stereophile magazine has awarded numerous JBL models the prestigious "Recommended Components" award, recognizing their sound and build quality. What Hi-Fi has awarded several JBL speakers the "Best Buy" title in their respective price categories. The Audio Engineering Society has awarded JBL the Gold Medal for contributions to acoustic engineering. Reviews in Italian trade press, including Audioreview and Suono, have highlighted the tonal qualities and dynamics of JBL speakers.
JBL's audiophile target audience includes music lovers who seek sound quality and reliability at every price point. The entry-level range offers affordable speakers for those new to high fidelity, while the premium series meets the needs of the most demanding audiophiles. JBL speakers are perfectly suited to stereo systems powered by transistor integrated amplifiers and tube integrated amplifiers, ensuring versatility and compatibility with a variety of audio electronics. Digital sources such as CD, SACD, and DVD players find JBL speakers the ideal reproduction to unleash their full sonic potential.
JBL's Italian distribution network is extensive and professional, with specialized dealers in all major cities. The technical assistance service guarantees qualified after-sales support and original spare parts for all products. Authorized service centers offer maintenance and calibration services to maintain consistent performance over time. The Italian distribution network actively collaborates with dealers to provide specialized technical advice and personalized demos for every audiophile need.

Floorstanding or bookshelf speakers: a guide to choosing

Imposing tower or compact bookshelf? It's the question every enthusiast asks at least once, and the answer is never obvious. The choice between floorstanding and bookshelf speakers depends on more than just budget or space...

Anatomy of a Tower: What Makes a Speaker Unique

A floorstanding speaker is built to stand alone, without the need for external supports. Its height—often between 80 and 120 centimeters—allows it to house multiple separate drivers: a tweeter for highs, a midrange driver for midrange, and one or more woofers for bass. This multi-way configuration offers more granular control over different portions of the sound spectrum.
