Description

Thorens MM008 Silver – Premium Phono Preamplifier with Swiss Precision

When listening to vinyl becomes a ritual of pure emotion, the Thorens MM008 Silver transforms every track into an uncompromising sonic experience. This phono preamplifier encapsulates 130 years of Swiss excellence in a refined design that enhances every nuance of your vinyl collection.

Swiss Precision Sound Engineering

The beating heart of the MM008 Silver lies in its ultra-precise RIAA phono circuitry, developed with the meticulousness that has distinguished Thorens since 1883. The electronic architecture implements a double amplification stage with variable gain: 60 dB for MC (Moving Coil) cartridges and 40 dB for MM (Moving Magnet) cartridges, ensuring maximum flexibility in the choice of cartridge.

The MC section offers three selectable input impedances (10, 100, and 1000 Ohm) via the included interchangeable plugs, allowing for optimal pairing with cartridges of any technical specification. For MM cartridges, the standardized impedance of 47 kOhm with a load capacitance of 220 pF ensures perfect matching with most magnetic cartridges on the market.

Sensitivity parameters are calibrated with engineering precision: 3,29 mV RMS for MM and 0,325 mV RMS for MC, both for -10 dBV output, ensuring an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio and crystal-clear dynamics even with the most delicate passages.

Transformative Listening Experience

The MM008 Silver reveals hidden dimensions of your favorite music, from the enveloping warmth of classic jazz to the surgical precision of electronic music. The timbre is natural and engaging, with a three-dimensional spatiality that places each instrument in the right place on the soundstage.

The implemented RIAA equalization reproduces the original recording curve with an accuracy that preserves the artistic intent of the master. High frequencies emerge crystal clear without ever being aggressive, while the low register maintains control and definition even in the most complex passages.

Excellent stereo separation creates a wide and stable soundstage, where every detail finds its space without overlap or masking. The silence between notes becomes palpable, revealing the "black" of vinyl that only a superior phono preamplifier can reproduce.

The explosive dynamics and the absence of artificial colorations make every listen an authentic emotional journey, respecting the unique character of each recording.

Versatile Setup and Professional Connectivity

The MM008 Silver is installed in minutes thanks to the high-quality gold-plated RCA connectors and internal wiring optimized to reduce interference. The external 24V switching power supply eliminates all electrical noise from the audio section, keeping the main chassis completely dedicated to signal purity.

The compact dimensions (150 x 50 x 117 mm) allow for discreet placement next to the turntable or inside the hi-fi rack, while the Silver finish gives it a timeless elegance that harmonizes with components of any brand and style.

Universal compatibility with integrated amplifiers, line preamplifiers and active systems makes the MM008 the ideal choice for instant upgrades to existing systems or for new vinyl-dedicated setups.

Thorens Heritage: 130 Years of Audio Innovation

Since 1883, Thorens has represented the pinnacle of Swiss audio manufacturing, combining traditional craftsmanship and technological innovation. The MM008 Silver inherits this DNA of excellence, incorporating circuit solutions derived from research into the brand's flagship models.

Thorens' design philosophy prioritizes substance over form, creating products designed to last decades while maintaining unwavering performance. Each component is selected for its thermal stability and long-term reliability.

MM008 vs MM002: Performance Evolution

Compared to the entry-level MM002 model, the MM008 Silver introduces MC versatility with selectable impedances and 20 dB more gain, opening the door to the most sophisticated moving coil cartridges. The revised circuitry also offers superior dynamics and lower floor noise, fully justifying the additional investment for the most demanding audiophiles.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between MM and MC cartridges? MM (Moving Magnet) cartridges have higher output and are easier to use, while MC (Moving Coil) cartridges offer greater detail and dynamics but require more gain. The MM008 supports both types.

How do I choose the correct impedance for my MC cartridge? Consult the manufacturer's specifications: generally 10Ω for low-impedance MCs, 100Ω for medium-impedance MCs, and 1000Ω for high-impedance MCs. Correct matching optimizes frequency response and dynamics.

Is it compatible with turntables without built-in preamps? Absolutely. The MM008 is specifically designed for turntables with a pure phono output, converting the signal to line level for the main amplifier.

Can I use it with USB or Bluetooth turntables? No, these turntables already have built-in preamplification. The MM008 is designed exclusively for analog turntables with a standard phono output.

How long does a complete break-in period take? Optimal performance is achieved after about 50-100 hours of use, when all electronic components reach ideal thermal stability.

Is it necessary to ground the turntable? Yes, always connect the ground wire from the turntable to the ground terminal on the MM008 to eliminate hum and mains interference.

About the brand

A story born in Switzerland

Thorens is one of the oldest names in sound reproduction. The family business was registered in 1883 by Hermann Thorens in Sainte-Croix, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, where music boxes and clockworks were produced. The first phonographs arrived in 1903, and an electric-powered turntable in 1928. From there, the brand continued throughout the 20th century, linking its name to some of the most beloved turntables among enthusiasts. After the difficulties of the late 1990s, in 2018, the company was led by Gunter Kürten, formerly a manager at Denon and Elac, who moved the headquarters to Bergisch Gladbach, Germany.

The models that have set a precedent

The TD 124, produced between 1957 and 1965, remains a benchmark for construction and stability. In 1965, the TD 150 introduced the suspended subchassis with a belt-driven internal platter to a mass-produced turntable, a solution adopted from the 1972 TD 160 and the entire family that followed. This design isolates the tonearm and platter from external vibrations and explains why these designs remain a benchmark to this day.

Current production reinterprets this legacy with modern solutions. The TD 124 DD replaces the transmissionThe TD 1600 and TD 1601 feature a subchassis suspended on three conical springs and the Helmut Thiele-designed TP 160 tonearm with a knife-edge bearing; the TD 1601 adds electric arm lift and automatic stop. The TD 1500 is a contemporary homage to the TD 150, while the DD series (TD 402 DD, TD 403 DD, TD 404 DD) offers direct drive at various levels of engagement.

What you find at Audiocostruzioni

Among the new turntables available are the TD 124 DD, the TD 1600 TP 160 and TD 1601 TP 160, the TD 1500, the TD 402DD, TD 403DD and TD404DD, as well as the simpler TD 101 A, TD 102 A automatic, TD 202 and TD204. For the cartridge there is the SPU TD 124, made with Ortofon for pairing with the TD 124 DD. As for phono preamps, we carry the MC 1600 balanced for MM and MC cartridges, the MM 008 ADC with USB output, the MM 008 and the MM002. The offer is completed by the TAB1600 Absorber base and the Stabilizer.

How to choose

If you're looking for a turntable you can plug in right away and use without a care, an automatic model like the TD 102 A or a DD with a built-in preamp like the TD 402 DD is the most convenient choice. Those looking for a leap in quality and the ability to swap cartridges over time will look at the TD 403 DD, the TD 1500, or the TD 1600 and 1601, which require a good external preamp. The TD 124 DD and the TD 404DD are designed for high-end systems, where the tonearm and cartridge become part of an overall design.

How to Choose Your First Turntable: A Practical Guide (2025)

Entering the world of vinyl today means facing a choice that seems more complicated than it should be. Between belt-drive and direct drive, moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, straight and curved tonearms, the risk is getting lost in technicalities before even…

Belt drive or direct drive: which one to start with?

The first distinction in the world of turntables is between belt-drive and direct-drive. In the former, an external motor moves the platter via an elastic belt; in the latter, the motor is integrated into the platter's spindle. The difference isn't superficial: it changes the way the record spins, and consequently the sound it produces.
