About the brand
Mission Founded in England in 1977 by Farad Azima, with his brother Henry and Stan Curtis among its first directors. The first product was the 770 loudspeaker, introduced in 1978, which the company claims was the first commercial model with a polypropylene woofer; the more compact and affordable 700 arrived in 1980. In the 1980s, the catalog expanded to include tonearms, turntables, and electronics: the 778 integrated amplifier of 1983 was the last to bear the name. Mission before the amplification projects continued under the Cyrus brand.
Today Mission is part of International Audio Group (IAG), the group based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, which also includes Wharfedale, Quad, Audiolab e LeakThe acoustic design is led by Peter Comeau, IAG's director of acoustic design, and the current range incorporates redesigned historical models: the new 770 was launched in 2022 and is built in Huntingdon.
The distinctive feature of the speakers Mission It's IDG, or Inverted Driver Geometry: the tweeter is mounted below the woofer instead of above, so that the sound paths from the two speakers to the listener are the same length and arrive aligned in time. The second common thread is polypropylene, now filled with minerals to stiffen the cone, combined with a 28 mm dome tweeter. In the 770, the woofer is 200 mm and the reflex cabinet has double walls of MDF and chipboard to move resonances out of the audible range.
For sale are three bookshelf speakers from the historic line: the 750, introduced in 2024, with a 13,5 cm woofer and bookshelf dimensions; the 700, with a 165 mm woofer and the original's white front panel; the 770, with its dedicated steel stands built in England; and the 700 also has its own stand, the 700 Stand. The electronics are the half-width 778 series: the 778X integrated amplifier with 45 W per channel into 8 ohms, with an ESS ES9018K2M DAC, moving magnet phono stage, and aptX and AAC Bluetooth; the 778S streamer, based on the Silent Angel platform, Roon Ready and compatible with Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, and AirPlay 2; and the 778CDT CD transport, with TCXO clock and coaxial and optical digital outputs. The proposal is completed by the LX Connect DAC, a converter with preamplifier and headphone output developed with Audiolab, which also accepts the TV via HDMI ARC.
When choosing a speaker, the room is the main factor. The 750 is designed for bookshelves and small rooms; the 700, on a stand, strikes the right balance in a medium-sized living room; the 770, with 88 dB of sensitivity and a response that drops to 30 Hz at -6 dB, performs best in larger rooms and with its stand. On the electronics front, the 778X alone covers turntables, Bluetooth, and digital sources; pairing the 778S and 778CDT creates a complete system, with two devices side by side taking up the space of a single traditional component. Those who already have an amplifier and want to add digital inputs, TV sound, and a good headphone output will find the LX Connect DAC the most straightforward solution.
