About the brand
Monitor Audio It was founded in 1972 by Mo Iqbal in Teversham, near Cambridge, where the first speakers were assembled by hand. In 1976, production moved to a factory in Essex, and since 2000 the headquarters have been in Rayleigh, also in Essex, where it remains today. In 1997, Iqbal sold the company to a group of enthusiasts, including Andrew Flatt, who has remained the sole owner; since 2004, speaker manufacturing has taken place in China.
The brand's hallmark is its speakers with metal cones. The 1980s saw the arrival of gold-dome tweeters, followed by C-CAM technology, short for Ceramic-Coated Aluminum/Magnesium: cones made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy coated with ceramic, a material developed in the aerospace industry that is highly resistant to bending and reduces distortion. In 1991, the Studio 20, a floorstander with a 6,5-inch metal cone woofer and metal dome tweeter, was reviewed several times by Stereophile and remains one of the company's most memorable models.
The Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum series, updated from generation to generation, cover everything from compact speakers to flagship models, along with subwoofers, center channels, and in-wall speakers. The 1980s-inspired Studio 89 is a standmount speaker with a pleated-diaphragm MPD tweeter placed between two woofers, in the so-called MTM arrangement. In November 2016 Monitor Audio acquired the English brand Roksan. The company is active and produces new speakers; only used models are available on our website.
