About the brand

Polk Audio was founded in Baltimore in 1972 by Matthew Polk, George Klopfer, and Sandy Gross, three graduates of Johns Hopkins University, with the idea of building loudspeakers with the most faithful sound possible. The early years were spent in an old mansion on Notre Dame Lane, which served as both a laboratory and a home. Aficionados first came to prominence in 1974 with the Monitor 7.
In 1984, Polk introduced SDA (Stereo Dimensional Array) technology, designed to reduce crosstalk between the two ears, which narrows the stereo image; the principle returned to the Legend series in 2018 and is still used in soundbars. Corporately, the brand was acquired by Directed Electronics in 2006, then became part of Sound United, the Denon and Marantz group; Sound United was acquired by Masimo in 2022 and by Harman International in 2025.
In the Reserve Series, the Pinnacle Ring Radiator tweeter has a pointed shape that guides the dispersion of the high frequencies and widens the listening area, the Turbine Cone woofer combines a foam core with a turbine geometry to stiffen the cone without weighing it down, and the X-Port port filters out reflex resonances. The Signature Elite uses Hi-Res certified Terylene tweeters, Dynamic Balance cones in mica-filled polypropylene, and the Power Port port. The Monitor XT brings the Hi-Res Terylene tweeter to the front end, with passive radiators on the XT60 and XT70 towers.

When choosing, it's best to start with the intended use. Those building a first home theater system will find the Monitor XT offers all the channels, including the height channels, and speakers like the XT20 that work with 4- and 8-ohm receivers. Those who listen to a lot of stereo music can opt for the ES20 or R200, which can be placed on stands; in a large room, the R700, with two 8-inch woofers, moves more air than the R600, a two-way tower about 28 cm wide, suitable for spaces with limited space. For multichannel setups, it's best to stick to the same series for a uniform timbre.
