Description

The Technics SL-1200GR2 is the first of Technics' new-generation direct-drive turntables, shown here in a silver finish. New to the design is the ΔΣ-Drive (Delta Sigma Drive), a motor drive system that applies Technics' expertise in PWM signals: it reduces harmonics and motor vibrations for smoother and more precise rotation, and therefore more faithful groove reading.

The single-rotor coreless motor eliminates cogging, the rotational irregularity typical of iron-core motors. The power supply is a switch-mode power supply above 100 kHz, eliminating the need for a large transformer, with active noise cancellation via current injection. The two-layer die-cast aluminum platter with rubber damping weighs 2,5 kg, 0,8 kg more than the one in the SL-1200MK5, and dampens vibrations more than twice as effectively.

The gimbaled aluminum S-shaped tonearm is hand-assembled and adjusted in Japan and has an initial sensitivity of 5 mg or less; the included auxiliary counterweight expands the choice of cartridges. The chassis combines die-cast aluminum and BMC and sits on high-damping silicone feet. Can it be used for DJing? Yes: it has ±8% and ±16% pitch, electronic brake, and 78 rpm, but it requires a phono input or external phono preamplifier.

About the brand

Technics represents a cornerstone of the global hi-fi industry: a Japanese brand founded in 1965 as the name of high-end speakers from Matsushita, now Panasonic, has over time become the group's signature high-fidelity brand. Positioned in the premium segment of the international hi-fi market, Technics has won over audiophiles and sound professionals thanks to its build quality and innovative technological solutions, starting with its direct-drive turntables.
The name Technics comes from the word "technology" and sums up the brand's approach: rigorous engineering aimed at the most faithful musical reproduction possible. Technics research focuses on materials, the optimization of analog and digital circuits, and mechanical solutions for vibration control. The brand has always favored engineering over passing fads, and its turntables have become a standard in the professional and DJ worlds as well.
Technics' signature technologies include the acclaimed Direct Drive system for turntables, born with the SP-10 and made famous by the SL-1200, which eliminates the rotational irregularities typical of belt-driven systems; in current models it uses a coreless motor, without an iron core, which avoids micro-vibrations from "cogging". In amplification, Technics has developed the JENO Engine (Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimization), a fully digital amplification system, and LAPC (Load Adaptive Phase Calibration) technology, which measures the behavior of the amplifier with the connected speakers and corrects variations in amplitude and frequency via DSP. fase due to the impedance of the speaker.
The Technics product lineup extends from reference turntables to integrated amplifiers, from network and SACD/CD players to floorstanding and bookshelf speakers for audiophile stereo systems. The source division includes the legendary SL series turntables, true industry benchmarks, and players such as the SL-G700, a network player with SACD/CD. Technics amplifiers, both integrated and separate power amplifiers, are renowned for their linearity and speaker control.
The hi-fi range is organized into three levels. The Reference Class represents the pinnacle of Technics production, with components such as the SL-1000R turntable, featuring a dual-coil coreless motor and a 7,9 kg platter, and the SE-R1 stereo power amplifier, with JENO Engine, LAPC, and linear power supply. The Grand Class sits one step below, with models such as the SL-1200G turntable, SU-G700 integrated amplifier, and SB-G90 speakers, while the Premium Class offers more compact and accessible solutions for those who want to enter the world of Technics.
Technics regularly receives positive reviews from the international trade press, which recognizes its technical excellence in the premium hi-fi segment.
Technics' target audience includes discerning audiophiles, vinyl collectors, music enthusiasts, and music industry professionals. The three-tier product lineup extends from Premium Class components to Reference Class products.

Best Turntables: 5 Mistakes That Cause You to Buy the Wrong One

Rankings of the "best turntables" last only as long as the model they recommend. The mistakes that lead to buying the wrong one, however, have been the same for twenty years—and they don't depend on which model comes out this year. We see them repeated in stores every…

Mistake 1: Comparing turntables by price alone

This is the most costly mistake, and almost no one notices it in time. A turntable alone doesn't make sound: it needs a cartridge and a phono preamplifier. Two models that cost the same in the shop window can have very different destinies, because one arrives fully assembled and the other not.
