About the brand

Thiel Audio was founded in 1976 in Lexington, Kentucky, in the Thiel home garage by Jim Thiel, Tom Thiel, and Kathy Gornik with $25.000 borrowed from parents and friends. In 1977, they presented their first speaker, the Model 01, at CES, and in 1978, the Model 03 introduced the idea that would guide all of Jim Thiel's projects: consistency of time and sound. fase, that is, to make the sound from all the speakers reach the listener at the same time.
To achieve this, Thiel used first-order crossover filters and angled front panels, which time-align the various drivers. This gave rise to the CS series: the CS2, introduced in 1982 and updated to the CS2.7 in 2012; the CS3.6, named Stereophile's Loudspeaker of the Year in 1993; the CS1.6, an evolution of the CS1.5, shown at CES in 2002; the CS2.4, reviewed by Stereophile in 2005; and the CS3.7 in 2006.
Jim Thiel died in September 2009. In 2012, the company was sold to a Nashville-based investment fund, which moved it to Tennessee and abandoned Jim Thiel's original plans. Thiel Audio closed on January 31, 2018, and filed for bankruptcy in October of the same year.
For those buying a used Thiel, there's good news: at the end of 2017, Rob Gillum, the longtime technical service manager, took over the service department and founded Coherent Source Service in Lexington, specializing in Thiel loudspeakers built between 1977 and 2012. In 2025, the business was taken over by Gary Dayton, also a former Thiel service manager. The amplifier should also be considered: some models, like the CS3.6, have very low impedance and require a robust power amplifier.
