Cavi di alimentazione

The power cable carries electricity from the wall outlet, or power strip, to your amplifier, player, or streamer. Every hi-fi device has a built-in power supply that transforms and filters the current, so the cable doesn't "create" sound quality. What you can expect from a well-made hi-fi power cable is a secure connection, plugs that hold firmly, a suitable cross-section for absorption, and, in shielded models, less interference radiated to nearby signal cables. In established systems, some people notice differences, others don't: consider it a refinement, not the first upgrade. To understand the priorities, read the guide: Do hi-fi cables really matter?

Schuko plug and IEC socket

On the wall side, household cables almost always have a Schuko plug; on the appliance side, there's an IEC connector. Most amplifiers and sources use the more common three-prong socket, while some high-power devices, such as certain power amplifiers, have a larger IEC socket and require the corresponding cable. Before choosing, check the back of your appliance or the manual.

Section, length and shielding

  • Section: a power amplifier requires a more generous conductor than a DAC or a streamer, which absorb little.
  • Length: Measure the cable as needed, avoiding loose wires; coiled wires can generate more heat and pick up noise.
  • Shielding and rigidity: Shielded cables help when running close to signal cables, but they are often thick and rigid: make sure the plug does not pry into the appliance socket.

What to really expect

If you hear a constant hum, before replacing the cable, check the cable routing, the turntable's ground connection, and the antenna or TV connection: this is often where the problem arises. A good power cable is the right choice when you want solid, tidy connections, perhaps in conjunction with a filtered power strip or a power conditioner.

The power cables you find with us

Among the new power cables you will find Furutech, AudioQuest, Van den Hul and Supra Cables, from models for sources and small devices to those designed for amplifiers and power amplifiers. Among the most popular are the Supra LoRad 2.5 MKII, Van den Hul The Mainsserver Hybrid, AudioQuest NRG-X3 and Furutech G314 Ag 15 Plus.

You can see and listen to complete systems in the listening room at our Carpi (MO) showroom, or order them online with shipping. If you're unsure which connector or section you need, please email us with your device model.
