A DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) transforms digital music into an analog signal that an amplifier can play. Every digital source contains one: CD players, streamers, computers, TVs, and smartphones. An external DAC replaces the internal one with one specifically designed for hi-fi listening and becomes the hub for all your digital sources. Inputs: USB, optical and coaxial

First, check which sources you want to connect. The USB input is used for computers and some network transports and often supports higher resolutions. The optical input (Toslink) is common on TVs, game consoles, and players; the coaxial input is found on CD players, transports, and streamers; the AES/EBU, on an XLR connector, is present on many high-end models. Some DACs also have a Bluetooth receiver for quick listening from your smartphone. Finally, check the outputs: unbalanced RCA or balanced XLR, depending on your amplifier's inputs.

When an external DAC is convenient

An external DAC makes sense if you listen to a lot of music from digital sources and your sources' internal converter is the weak link in the chain: this often happens with inexpensive computers, TVs, streamers, or older CD players. Some DACs also have volume controls and a headphone output, and can function as a digital preamplifier connected directly to a power amplifier or active speakers.

R2R and sigma-delta

Most DACs use sigma-delta chips, a mature, precise technology that's widely used at all price points. R2R DACs, also known as multibit or resistor ladder DACs, perform the conversion using precision resistor networks and are prized by many enthusiasts for their sonic character. Both architectures can sound excellent: the quality depends on how the individual converter, power supply, and output stage are built.
