Ten years after its debut, Meze Audio is bringing back the model that built the Romanian brand's reputation. The 99 Classics 2nd Gen retain the original's silhouette and materials—CNC-machined walnut earcups, a die-cast zinc chassis, and a spring steel headband—but introduce ten technical improvements that significantly alter their acoustic behavior.
The most noticeable change concerns the tuning. The second generation approaches a neutral and balanced target: the bass remains engaging but more restrained, allowing the mids and highs to emerge with greater clarity. The internal volume of the pavilion has been increased, moving cavity resonances downward and reducing standing waves; the baffle has been redesigned with a more open grille and slimmed down ribs to contain diffraction in front of the 40 mm dynamic driver . The result is a more stable stereo image and superior instrument separation compared to the 2015 model.
Those who prefer the warm signature of the original don't have to give them up: they come with interchangeable acoustic absorbers that bring the balance to a softer tone. Two voices, then, in the same pair of hi-fi over-ear headphones.
On the practical front, the 16 Ω impedance combined with a sensitivity of 103 dB SPL/mW makes these closed-back audiophile headphones easy to drive even from smartphones and laptops. This is where the most current innovation comes in: how do you connect hi-fi headphones to a phone without a jack output? Meze includes a custom USB-C DAC/AMP adapter , which replaces the missing output on modern devices without requiring an external headphone amplifier. For home audio, the gold-plated 6,3 mm jack adapter and the double-braided OFC cable with Kevlar coating, which is more tangle-resistant than the previous one, remain.
The input jack has been increased to 7 mm in diameter to accommodate even the larger 3,5 mm connectors: a detail that paves the way for aftermarket braided copper or silver cables. The memory foam earpads have been upgraded from a sock system to a clip-on system, with a fixed orientation and instant replacement. Each component—earcups, headband, cable, drivers—remains individually replaceable, in line with Meze's long-standing repairable approach.
They're the natural choice for office listening, travel, or any situation where the isolation of a closed design is essential, and for anyone looking for audiophile wooden headphones capable of withstanding long listening sessions without fatigue. Each pair of earcups requires up to eight hours of workmanship and over forty-five days of sanding, painting, and finishing: the walnut grain is never identical from one piece to the next.

Impedance: The load the speakers present to the amplifier
Impedance is measured in ohms (Ω) and indicates the electrical resistance that a speaker oppoto the signal coming from the amplifier. The most common values are 4, 6, and 8 ohms. The lower the impedance, the more current the amplifier must deliver to achieve the same volume. Why is this important? Because an amplifier designed for 8-ohm loads might struggle—or even go into protection—with 4-ohm speakers, especially
