About the brand
Canton was founded in October 1972 in Weilrod, in the Taunus region northwest of Frankfurt, by four partners: Hubert Milbers, Otfried Sandig, Wolfgang Seikritt, and Günther Seitz. Over fifty years later, the company is still family-owned, now in its second generation, and is not part of any investment group or fund. Its headquarters and production remain in Weilrod, alongside a components plant near Tachov, in the Czech Republic.
Canton's work begins with the membrane materials. In the Reference series, the woofers and midrange drivers use BCT (Black Ceramic Tungsten) cones, made of aluminum partially transformed into ceramic and enriched with tungsten, to combine lightness and rigidity; the 25 mm tweeter has a black aluminum oxide ceramic dome. The cabinets have curved sides and backs to reduce resonances, and all Reference models are made in Germany. The Reference 5 GS instead uses a tweeter with a DLC dome, made of diamond-like carbon.
The more affordable series follow the same logic with different materials. The GLE S2 features ATB aluminum-titanium woofers and midrange drivers, triple-fold wave surrounds, and aluminum tweeters with waveguides. The new Vento, presented in May 2026, combines ATB drivers, ceramic dome tweeters, and curved multilayer MDF cabinets, while the Townus brings the Vento's technology to a more classic cabinet.
At the top are the Reference Alpha 1 and Alpha 2, introduced at the 2024 Munich High End Show, with BCT cones and diamond dome tweeters. Below, the Reference series ranges from the Reference 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 towers to the compact Reference 9, with Reference Center and Reference Sub. For its 50th anniversary in 2022, Canton has reintroduced two historic names as GS Editions, dedicated to Günther Seitz: the Karat GS Edition, which retains the side-mounted woofer, and the Ergo GS Edition, which harks back to Canton's first floorstanding speaker from 1979.
In a small room, the natural choice is a bookshelf model like the GLE 30 S2, Townus 30, or Vento 31, or even better, a stand-mounted model like the Vento LS or Reference LS. In a medium-sized living room, the GLE 80 S2, Townus 90, or Vento 81 towers provide more bass extension without taking up too much space; in larger rooms, the real leap is the Reference series, starting with the Reference 7 and 5.
For home theater, it's best to stay within the same series, so that the front, center, and surround speakers have the same timbre: the GLE S2 offers the GLE 50 Center S2 center speaker, the GLE 90 AR S2 tower speaker with integrated Dolby Atmos module, and the AR 4 S2 module, while the Vento has the Vento 51 center speaker and the Vento AR 1 module. For surrounds, where floor space is limited, there are the GLE 15 OnWall S2, Townus 10, and Vento 11 in-wall models; with compact speakers, even in stereo, a Power Sub 8, 10, or 12 S2 subwoofer completes the low range.
