About the brand

Focal was founded in 1979 in Saint-Étienne, France, by engineer Jacques Mahul; the first loudspeaker manufacturing workshop was hosted by France Filières, a local precision engineering company. Among the first products was the DB 13 bookshelf speaker, with Polyglass and Polykevlar cones. In 1995, the Grande Utopia arrived, and in 2011, a merger with British company Naim Audio created the Vervent Audio group. In 2016, Focal introduced the Utopia headphones, and in 2022, the Bathys, its first wireless headphones with active noise reduction. In 2024, the brand joined the Comité Colbert, the association of high-end French manufacturers; its hi-fi speakers are manufactured in France.
Focal's hallmark is the inverted dome tweeter. In the higher series the dome is made of pure beryllium: the Kanta uses the 27 mm IAL3 tweeter, the Sopra the rear-loading IHL, which absorbs large amounts of sound.dualThe wave emitted from the back of the dome is precisely the wave. For the midrange and bass, the reference material is linen: in the Kanta cones it is sandwiched between two layers of glass fiber, and it is also found in the Aria Evo X; in the Kanta and Sopra midrange, the TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension controls resonances, and in the Sopra, the NIC magnetic circuit stabilizes the field to reduce distortion. The Theva series instead uses the aluminum and magnesium TNF tweeter and Slatefiber cones made of recycled carbon fiber.
The inverted dome returns in the headphones: the Utopia features 40 mm drivers with an “M” dome in pure beryllium, the same material chosen for the closed Stellia.
For sale you can find the Theva N°1, N°2, N°3, N°3-D and Theva Center speakers; Aria Evo XN°1, N°2, N°3, N°4 and Center; Kanta N°1, N°2, N°3 and Center; Sopra N°1, N°2 and N°3. For bass there are the Sub 600 P, Sub 1000 F, Sub Air and Cub Evo subwoofers, for compact home cinema the Dôme Flax and Sib Evo systems. Headphones include the Azurys, Hadenys, Clear MG, Stellia and Utopia wired, Bathys and Bathys MG wireless.
The Theva is the starting point for a living room: the Theva N°2 is used with its base, which tilts the speaker backward to time-align the drivers with the listener. The Aria Evo X brings flax cones, the Kanta adds a beryllium tweeter with 91 dB of sensitivity on the N°2, so it doesn't require particularly powerful amplifiers; the Sopra is the top step of our offering. For a home theater system, it's best to choose center and surround speakers from the same series as the front speakers.
When it comes to headphones, the first question is where you listen: at home, with a good amplifier, open-back headphones like the Clear MG and Utopia; in shared environments, the closed-back Stellia; and when traveling, the Bathys, which don't require cables.
