About the brand
Sumiko is an American brand specializing in phonograph cartridges, founded in 1972 in California as an importer of audio products for the US market. Founded by David Fletcher and two partners, the company later developed its own products, establishing itself in the high-fidelity market thanks to a philosophy focused on faithful reproduction in the analog field.
After its initial years of importing, Sumiko made its name with products such as the MDC-800 tonearm and Talisman cartridges, which paved the way for the production of its own branded cartridges. Sumiko cartridges are manufactured in Japan, hand-assembled at the Excel Sound factory in Yokohama, with the collaboration of designer Masao Okada. The brand's philosophy is based on mechanical precision and the belief that analog reproduction offers a natural and immersive musical experience.
The Sumiko product range includes both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. The Oyster series moving magnet cartridges, such as the Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, and Amethyst, represent the brand's entry point into the world of moving magnet cartridges. Rainier, Olympia, and Moonstone share the same body, allowing the stylus to be swapped for a higher-quality one without replacing the cartridge. Moving coil cartridges are the top-of-the-line choice for discerning audiophiles.
Among moving coils, the Blue Point has been one of the brand's best-known offerings for years, a high-output moving coil that can also be used with moving magnet phono inputs. The Reference Series includes the Songbird, also available in a high-output version, and the Starling, with a MicroRidge stylus on a boron cantilever. At the top of the range are models like the Pearwood Celebration and the Palo Santos Presentation, a benchmark for high-end stereo systems.
The brand is appreciated by the international specialized press for the tonal balance and detail extraction capacity of its cartridges, which place it among the references of the analogue hi-fi market.
The target audience includes audiophiles passionate about analog reproduction, vinyl collectors and owners of high-fidelity systems who seek the highest quality in music reproduction, from entry-level cartridges up to top-of-the-line models.
