About the brand
Yamaha was founded in 1887 in Hamamatsu, Japan, when Torakusu Yamaha began building reed organs; the current name, Yamaha Corporation, was adopted in 1987 for its centennial. From musical instruments, the company moved on to sound reproduction: the 1954 Yamaha Hi-Fi Player is credited with being one of the first audio devices to bear the "Hi-Fi" acronym in its name, and in 1974, the NS-1000M speakers, with beryllium domes for the midrange and treble, became reference monitors.
At the top of the line is the 5000 Series. The NS-5000 speakers use Zylon diaphragms for the tweeters, midrange drivers and woofers; the C-5000 preamplifier has fully balanced discrete circuitry and two toroidal transformers.daliThe M-5000 power amp adopts Yamaha's floating, balanced power stage. The GT-5000 turntable is belt-driven, with a short, straight tonearm made of carbon fiber and copper-plated aluminum.
The AS series integrated amplifiers share a classic setup: the A-S1200 and A-S2200 boast 90 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and the A-S3200 100 watts, all with a 625 VA toroidal transformer. Compared to the A-S1200, the A-S2200 adds a balanced input and a more powerful headphone output. For headphones, Yamaha also offers the HA-L7A amplifier, which adopts the floating and balanced technology of its power amplifiers, to be paired with the YH-5000SE, open-back headphones with planar magnets.
For sale are the A-S301, A-S501, A-S701, A-S1200, A-S2200, and A-S3200 integrated amplifiers; the R-N600A, R-N800A, R-N1000A, and R-N2000A network receivers; the C-5000 preamplifier, the M-5000 power amplifier, and the GT-5000 turntable; the CD-S303 and CD-C603 CD players; the TT-S303 and TT-N503 MusicCast VINYL 500 turntables. Speakers include the NS-333, NS-600A, NS-800A, NS-3000, NS-555, NS-777, NS-2000A, and NS-5000, as well as the NS-AW outdoor and NS-IC in-wall models; and headphones include the YH-4000, YH-5000SE, and YH-C3000 with the HA-L7A amplifier.
The first criterion is the source. CD and vinyl listeners can build their system around an AS integrated amplifier: the A-S301, A-S501, and A-S701 are starters, while the A-S1200, A-S2200, and A-S3200 are for larger, more sophisticated speakers. Those who primarily stream music will find the RN series a unique device with networking, the MusicCast app, and YPAO room correction; the R-N1000A also has a MM phono input, while the R-N2000A, with HDMI ARC, connects directly to a TV.
The 5000 series makes sense as a complete system, designed to work seamlessly from turntable to speakers. For headphone listening, the HA-L7A amplifier, specifically designed to drive the YH-5000SE, is ideal; the power of integrated amplifiers should be evaluated based on the room and the sensitivity of the speakers, rather than the declared wattage.
