About the brand
SAE, an acronym for Scientific Audio Electronics, is an American brand founded in Los Angeles at the end of the 1960s from Morris Kessler, which began in his apartment to sell an amplifier he had designed; sources indicate 1967 or 1968, the year of the partnership with Ted and Beth Winchester. The first commercial product was the transistor power amplifier. Mark 2 60 watts, which Gordon Holt on Stereophile compared to the famous Marantz Model 9: from there sales took off.
In the following years SAE built a complete range of electronics: preamplifiers such as the Mark XXX and the 2900, power amplifiers such as the Mark XXXI B, the 2400 L and the 2600, Mark VI and Mark VIII series tuners, the 4000 electronic crossover. The brand is credited with several firsts, including the first graphic equalizer, the first tuner with digital frequency readout and the first filter against record clicks.
This trend includes the SAE 5000, produced from 1976 to 1982 and presented as a system for reducing impulse noise: it instantly cut out clicks and pops from vinyl by reconstructing the signal. Alongside it were graphic equalizers, such as the 1800, the 2700 B, and the 2800.
In 1988, Kessler sold the company to record producer Giorgio Moroder, who closed it after about a year. The name has returned in recent years thanks to Kessler himself, who had by then taken over as head of ATI, with new, high-powered amplifiers such as the 2HP. The SAE units found used are therefore almost always the historic ones from the 1970s and 1980s.
