About the brand
Pioneer was founded in Tokyo in January 1938, when Nozomu Matsumoto opened a radio and speaker repair shop; the year before, he had developed the A-8 dynamic speaker. The company changed its name to Pioneer Electronic Corporation in 1961 and during the 1970s and 1980s, it was one of the major names in Japanese hi-fi, with a catalog that ranged from turntables to tape recorders, amplifiers, receivers, and speakers.
Among the most memorable models are the PL-12D turntable, introduced in 1973 and the best-selling model in the UK for about three years; the RT-1020L reel-to-reel tape recorder, released in the same year; the Exclusive M4 class-A power amplifier, released in 1974, from the prestige Exclusive line; and the SX-1980 receiver, released in 1978, from the SX series. Pioneer also played a major role in home video with the LaserDisc, whose first home player was released in 1980, and later with the Kuro plasma televisions.
The brand still exists, but its recent history is complex. In 2014, Pioneer sold its DJ equipment business to the KKR fund, which is now a separate company, and agreed to sell its home audio-video division to Onkyo, which was completed in 2015. Since 2021, Pioneer-branded hi-fi equipment has been manufactured under license by a joint venture between Premium Audio Company and Sharp, while Pioneer Corporation focuses primarily on car electronics. Our site only features used and vintage models.
Da Audiocostruzioni We offer used and vintage Pioneer equipment: the ones available are on this page and can be seen and heard in our Carpi showroom or ordered online with shipping. If you have any questions, please email us.
