The Thorens TD-160 turntable is a tweaker’s heaven. It is arguably Thorens’ second best turntable behind the TD-124. It is an incredibly good looking turntable for people who seek minimalism. The two knobs control the cueing lever and the pulley to switch between 33 and 45 rpm. Its 70s styling is enjoyable, and with an SME arm and new plinth it really is eye-catching. It is a classic turntable that punches well above its already hefty weight class. Despite its moderate price, this handsome slim line integrated transcription turntable shares many of the advanced engineering features and refinements of the highly sophisticated Thorens TD-125 mkII series. For example the identical TP16 tonearm and belt-driven synchronous motor used in the TD-125 mkII are incorporated into the Thorens TD-160. In addition it comes complete with a walnut base and dust cover.

Employing a gimbal suspension system for complete freedom of motion in the vertical and horizontal planes, the tonearm is mounted on friction-free aerospace-type ball bearings that are precisely honed and polished. Tracking error is exceptionally low at 0.2 degrees per cm of radius. Wide variety of high compliance cartridges can be selected with ultra-low tracking force, the tonearm of Thorens TD-160 readily accommodates them with a die cast magnesium, low mass plug-in shell. Replacing the conventional mechanical devices used by most other tonearms, Thorens uses frictionless magnetic anti-skating control integrated into the TP-16 tonearm. Not only does this provide better sound reproduction by eliminating wow and flutter because the stylus is precisely centered in the groove, it also extends record and stylus life.

The newly designed pulley system in Thorens TD-160 enables instant start up in just 1.5 seconds. There is constant and smooth in-phase precise speed through high torque belt-driven 16-pole synchronous motor. The new 2-stage output with operational amplifiers provides higher efficiency for greater output power, less heat and a lower magnetic stray field. Conveniently positioned on the front panel, the precision cuing control is isolated from the tonearm. At the touch of a finger it raises and lowers the arm smoothly, gently and precisely into the groove. This assures increased life of both stylus and records. Typical of Thorens meticulous attention to detail, the newly designed dented ring rubber mat on the platter serves a dual function. While it cushions the record, it also increases air circulation beneath the record with its double dented rings at the center and outer edges and eliminating resonances caused by trapped air. The special split-level design isolates the tonearm and drive system from each other on separate but integrated chassis. As a result, the rumble effects of the chassis, motor, acoustic feedback and outside vibrations are eliminated in the Thorens TD-160.

Una storia nata in Svizzera

Thorens è uno dei nomi più antichi della riproduzione sonora. L'attività della famiglia venne registrata nel 1883 da Hermann Thorens a Sainte-Croix, nel cantone di Vaud, in Svizzera, dove si producevano carillon e movimenti a orologeria. Nel 1903 arrivarono i primi fonografi e nel 1928 un giradischi con motore elettrico: da lì il marchio ha attraversato tutto il Novecento legando il proprio nome ad alcuni dei giradischi più amati dagli appassionati. Dopo le difficoltà di fine anni Novanta, nel 2018 la guida dell'azienda è passata a Gunter Kürten, già manager di Denon ed Elac, che ha trasferito la sede a Bergisch Gladbach, in Germania.

I modelli che hanno fatto scuola

Il TD 124, prodotto tra il 1957 e il 1965, è ancora oggi un riferimento per costruzione e stabilità. Nel 1965 il TD 150 portò in un giradischi di grande serie il subchassis sospeso con piatto interno trascinato a cinghia, soluzione ripresa dal TD 160 del 1972 e da tutta la famiglia che ne è derivata. È un'impostazione che isola braccio e piatto dalle vibrazioni esterne e che spiega perché questi progetti restino ancora oggi un riferimento.

La produzione attuale rilegge questa eredità con soluzioni moderne. Il TD 124 DD sostituisce la trasmissione originale con una trazione diretta ad alta coppia e monta il braccio TP 124. I TD 1600 e TD 1601 adottano un subchassis sospeso su tre molle coniche e il braccio TP 160 progettato da Helmut Thiele, con cuscinetto a coltello; il TD 1601 aggiunge alzabraccio elettrico e arresto automatico. Il TD 1500 è l'omaggio contemporaneo al TD 150, mentre la serie DD (TD 402 DD, TD 403 DD, TD 404 DD) propone la trazione diretta a diversi livelli di impegno.

Se cerchi un giradischi da collegare subito e usare senza pensieri, un modello automatico come il TD 102 A o un DD con prephono integrato come il TD 402 DD è la scelta più comoda. Chi vuole un salto di qualità e la possibilità di cambiare testina nel tempo guarderà al TD 403 DD, al TD 1500 o ai TD 1600 e 1601, che richiedono un prephono esterno di buon livello. Il TD 124 DD e il TD404DD sono pensati per impianti di fascia alta, dove braccio e testina diventano parte di un progetto complessivo.
